Questions and answers from the meeting in Vilnius 2009

Installation of PC-Axis 2008

There are three different options to install PC-Axis 2008 on the download page. Traditionally PC-Axis has placed the ini file in the Windows directory counting on people being local administrators on their own PC. In many cases now organizations have changed so that the user no longer has the right to administer his PC, whether Wiindows Vista or XP is used.

The person doing the installation must have administrator rights. The installation requires some files to be entered into the registry. Also typically the program would be placed in the Program folder in which the user will not have access to write.

The different options are further described on the technical page

Menus in PC-Axis for other px programs

It is possible to get PX-Make, PX-Edit or other windows programs as options in PC-Axis File menu.

To do this select View - Advanced - More Features - Additions - Other programs - Change. For PX-Make and PX-Edit select file type px. Browse to the place where the program is located to get the complete path in the Program text field.

Save queries in PC-Axis

As from PC-Axis 2008 all the functionality can be saved using the "recording" option, except for:
Change decimals for a specific variable value.
Change text for a specific variable value
These two options are also not available in PX-Web

Aggregations / classifications

For the new dot net version an aim is to make a user interface that is easier to use, when creating aggregation files. One suggestion is to use an interface that looks more like the one in PC-Axis SQL classifications, which most people seem to find easier.

It is also planned to use XML file format for the vs and agg files. If anybody would like to contribute to the file format please mail to the PC-axis mail address. Also send any ideas about the format for creating hierarchies for px files as is suggested to use instead of the keywords for hierarchies in the px files.

Save as.. in PC-Axis dot net

We would like to know how important the file formats dBase and text file for word processing is.

Concerning dBase version for MapInfo it has been suggested that a comma separated text file with a specific layout will be as easily used as the dBase format. For the other dBase format which is a relational format used as input to different programs and containing information about char and numeric fields, we have found no substitute. Please inform us how important this format is for you.

For the text file which has pages suitable for word processing it has been suggested that these will require quite a long programming time. Do you need this format or could you use the other text formats instead?

Send any comments to PC-Axis at scb.se
